How much protein do we need?
Protein needs are based on lean muscle mass. There is no easy way to measure this so we estimate it based on weight. Use the following to calculate ideal body weight (IBW) or adjusted body weight (ABW):
www.globalrph.com/ibw_calc.htm
If the 3rd yellow line, “Percent over/under ibw” is 20% or more, then you will use the weight in the second line, Adjusted Body Weight as your weight. Otherwise, you use your actual weight and if you are pregnant this would be your pre-pregnant weight.
Take that weight and multiply it by 0.4 and that is the estimate of the number of grams of protein you need per day.
Any questions?? (I love them...)

This is great! I totally need help with this stuff! I'm confused about the third yellow line. I'm pretty sure that I'll use my adjusted weight, but my third yellow line is 21% more- which is really different than 120% - am I just converting something wrong?
I really like having this sort of awareness about my nutrition!!! I'm excited about this blog's future!! :D Thanks, Aunt Joan!
oh, and I need to eat about 58 g/ a day! does that sound about right?
Sorry about the slow response. Guess I need to read my own blog more often...
You are right. About the third yellow line, I should have said if the number is 20% or more, use adjusted weight. And 58 grams/ day sounds about right.
